UNVEILED

Women’s rights are inextricably tied to land and place.

The Women Life Freedom movement in Iran ignited the exploration of using architecture and urban design as powerful tools for promoting social justice. The Iranian women-led uprising broke out on September 16th, 2022, and continues to oppose the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, who was killed by the morality police for improper hijab. As the ongoing protest has continued inside the heart of Iran, it has also been supported globally through protest. This work depicts the relationship between people’s behavior and the space they occupy during protests and how people interact with the built environment at street corners, city boundaries, or at the centers of urban spaces when peaceful protests turn violent. I examined how a spatial approach to representing the Sharif Univeristy protests can benefit social activists in their analysis efforts.
