ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR VACATION HOME IN FINLAND, MODIFIED TO BE A SAFE HOME FOR INDIGENOUS WOMEN.

Native women are often victims of their own households. Desperately, they search for an escape from the violence. Feeling frightened, Indigenous women tend not to seek out emotional support, as they worry for their own lives and the lives of their children. It feels impossible to stand up for oneself. The stigma of silence must come to a halt. Here sits a humble place to process after abuse has transpired.

Rivers are sacred places to Indigenous people. This safe house is a river. The main body of the home functions as the river, with undulating waters flowing to form the rooms.

The home’s form encompasses traditional Indigenous forms and building techniques. There are moments where longhouse, teepee, and hogan are observed for tenant familiarity and respect of tradition.
